She's actually doing an excellent job. She's telling the base exactly what they want to hear while presenting an image a lot of people are going to like, and she can lie without flinching. If the Democrats think this is going to be a cakewalk, they need to think again.
Biden is going to have a tough debate. Hell, McCain is going to have a hard time following this tomorrow.
It's funny that so many Republicans are excited about her because while she may be a social conservative, she definitely doesn't seem like a fiscal one.
There was trashing, Piedmont, but it wasn't generally as ham-fisted, although I'm biased.
And by the by, I'm one of those people who think Hitler gave some great speeches, but this is a really good speech IMO. I find its contents deplorable, but she's both presenting herself while at the same time rallying the base behind McCain. Add in some hardcore Obama trash talking and you've pretty much got all you'd want from a speech like this.
Although I'm not sure the being economical with the truth parts (bridge, oil) will sit very well with the media. But Republican strategists have known for a long time that people tend to forget these things quickly.
"If character is the measure in this election ... and hope the theme ... and change the goal we share, then I ask you to join our cause. Join our cause and help America elect a great man as the next president of the United States."
I agree, it was a good speech. If the public buys into a notion that its ok for her to know nothing but how to be feisty, it could end up being a decent pick for McCain, though he will still lose.
“The speech that Gov. Palin gave []well delivered, but it was written by George Bush’s speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we’ve heard from George Bush for the last eight years. If Gov. Palin and John McCain want to define ‘change’ as voting with George Bush 90 percent of the time, that’s their choice, but we don’t think the American people are ready to take a 10 percent chance on change,” said Bill Burton, Obama campaign spokesman.
">My favorite line was him saying we don't want big brother.
There is simply not enough vodka in the universe to erase the cognitive dissonance of hearing these venal, evil, emotional adolescents try to not only deny the last eight years, but their whole philosophy on the facts alone. Holy shit."
Thinking about it more, she gave a nice speech to the base, but she also gave away plenty of lines of attack to the other side. Based on what we've seen from Obama's campaign before, it should be even easier to dismantle McCain now.
Is passing normal? I've never watch this dang thing before.
It is for Prez & Veep home states, so they can time it so that they will put the nominee over the top (if you've seen the DNC roll call you know what I mean). They just time it so that they stop just before the magic number, then whichever delegation has the floor at that time yields it to Arizona (I guess this time) and Bam! Nominee.

fivethirtyeight: "I don't think the Republicans are doing as good a job as the Democrats were doing about pairing their speeches to the strengths of the speaker. It's as if they wrote seven or eight speeches, and drew lots to determine who would deliver which one. So you have Mitt Romney -- one of the wealthiest men ever to run for office -- critiquing east-coast elitism, and Mike Huckabee -- who is an economic populist in disguise -- critiquing big government, and Sarah Palin -- who voters don't know one iota about -- critiquing Barack Obama's biography."
Holy crap, The Thread is a monster. It makes my browser ache.
This thing about her son bother's more than anything else in the speech:
I'm just one of many moms who will say an extra prayer each night for our sons and daughters going into harm's way. Our son Track is 19, and one week from tomorrow, September 11th, he'll deploy to Iraq with the Army infantry in the service of his country.
Is he actually deploying on 9/11? Are we supposed to believe that's a coincidence? And isn't identifying him and putting his picture up there for the world to see putting him at increased risk? Every insurgent in Iraq will want to get him.
If anything, she's returning to Alaska to avoid the media as much as possible. She's a figurehead, she's given her little speech and now the Republicans will do everything they can to avoid putting her in the media.
I was astonished when they kept pushing that "legislators don't know how to govern angle." Not only does that make no sense, but like the "Washington insiders are bad" angle, it points out a supposed weakness that is not just present but taken to an extreme in a presidential candidate who's served over 20 years in the Senate. WTF?
Oh, they've taped the segment or or doing so now, I get that -- just figured that while I'm watching the RNC, I might as well see it as it first airs. I may figure something out still.
I think the RNC folks would cheer as hard if she said "I put the jet on myspace"
UNWISE.
Biden is going to have a tough debate. Hell, McCain is going to have a hard time following this tomorrow.
And the folksy family stuff was totally strategic, to get people to start off underestimating her. This is how it's gonna work.
Wow. Just wow.
and we SHOULD read them their fucking rights, because it's not a PRINCIPLE if you drop it when it's inconvenient.
TAX TAX TAX TAX TAX
At presidential nominating conventions?

Emph mine. She didn't name the states in the prepared remarks -- but how did she pronounce "nuclear" just now? Was this a pronunciation cue?
What ever happened to that NYT story? It seemed to only last a day or two while everyone went crazy over Edwards a few months later.

Obviously he wasn't.
"If character is the measure in this election ... and hope the theme ... and change the goal we share, then I ask you to join our cause. Join our cause and help America elect a great man as the next president of the United States."
She really is talking about Obama, right?
Weird mic stuff.
(Maybe that's where he's from...)
Raisin' McCain?

*shudders*
Heh, too true.

Hai we're the proud delegation from the great state of New Texarkania, home of superior potatoes, and we're voting yes!
Also, I haven't thought about Republican delegate counts since, like, February.
*sheds a tiara*
I have to look, just to see if it will make my computer asplode.

Thank you all so much, and God bless America!
(Tomorrow.)
... fine.
Ooh, next she's going to say how she stood up to Big Oil.
Translation: They don't have full serve stations in Alaska.
Rudy is not the guy to pull that off without seeming ubercreepy.
Dude, Rudy could not pull off a cardigan without seeming ubercreepy.

A little funny:
While Mitt Romney was cracking jokes about Al Gore's private jet...
... Al Gore was flying from San Francisco to Tampa on Southwest, on the same plane as my business partner and his wife.
Crowley: Phonetic Palin (I called it first! And yes, she did say "nucular" in Dayton.)
